Lawyers in free-for-all over constitution amendment

Port Harcourt—The timely intervention of security operatives saved the day, yesterday, as lawyers engaged themselves in a scuffle over alleged plans to rig the election process on constitution amendment.

At the Shark Stadium, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, venue of the Nigerian Bar Associa-tion, NBA, constitution amendment election, modalities for counting the votes became a subject of misunderstanding after voting ended.

Some lawyers insisted that the votes must be counted openly, while chairman of the electoral committee was alleged to have disagreed. Lawyers opposed to the association’s constitutional amendment had gone to court, though the leadership of NBA denied knowledge of the court processes at first.

Vanguard gathered that trouble started after the votes had been concluded and a group of lawyers insisted on observing the counting, which was allegedly opposed by the electoral committee.

Following the insistence of the lawyers that they must observe the counting of the votes, since same would make the process credible, the electoral committee conceded to allowing a lawyer observe the counting. This again became an issue as the lawyers insisted that a lawyer observing eight boxes was not right.
