There were some shock decisions made on tonight's episode of The X Factor which saw some of the judges' and audience favourites sent home before the live finals.

Soulful singer and audience favourite Jade was sent home by mentor Kelly Rowland in the girls category, while second-time contestant John said he would not be returning after losing out in this round for the second year running.

Retail worker Sammi Brookes, 31, was told she was going home in a surprise decision by Over 25s mentor Louis Walsh, but was put through at the eleventh hour after wacky contestant Goldie quit the competition.

Luke Lucas, Marcus collins and Craig Colton were the first of the boys group to hear their fate from Gary Barlow at his home in LA.

Luke broke broke down in tears when Gary told him he'd failed to make his final four.

The sweet-faced 16-year-old admitted before hearing the bad news that he believed his audition the day before for Gary and Robbie had let him down. 'I wasn't happy with my performance yesterday,' he said.

'I look back at the very first audition you knocked it out of the park, you were exceptional. So I was really excited yesterday. But I was disappointed,' Gary told him.

'I'm gutted,' Luke told Dermot after his tearful encounter with Gary.

It was good news though for Craig and Marcus, who both got through to the live finals.

Gary told Craig: 'For the first time yesterday I sat there thinking I was watching someone who is growing daily.' But he warned: 'I feel like you get lost in the music and I'm thinking let me in.'

‘I'm going to be in the live shows of The X Factor with Gary Barlow as my mentor, it's so bizarre and I am so happy, so happy,' Craig said afterwards. 'I'm feeling really good and really proud and I feel like I've got this big boost of confidence now. My parents were crying when they found out. I've done it, I've got to the finals, it's madness and I could not be happier.’

Marcus, 23, added: ‘I really cannot believe I'm through to the live shows. I'm just like a regular lad and I've been to LA and I'm now through to the live shows of The X factor, it's so exciting, I honestly can't contain myself. I never miss an episode and now I'm part of the show, I can't take it in. Walking out on stage is going to be unbelievable, I can't wait for them to say my name.’

Next up were Joe Cox, who has drawn comparisons to last year's Aiden Grimshaw, alongside Max Vickers and James Michaels.

'I think your audition was good, but not exceptional' Gary told James. 'Putting you through was gamble, but I'm not a gambling man.

'But I'm going to take a risk and a gamble, you're through,' he told him.

Unfortunately for Joe and Max, their X Factor dream was over.

The final two boy competitors Frankie and John were both nervous as they waited to hear the news.

'Yesterday I wanted to prove that I wasn't just here because of my antics, that I am talented,' 18-year-old Frankie said.

'I don't want to go back to being a bum again.'

'You make us laugh, you've got a great personality. But you're not the best singer here,' Gary told him.

'I got sent home last year, it was a big decision to come back. I'm absolutely dreading what Gary has to say,' John said. 'Going home the first time and saying I've not done it is hard, but going home the second is going to be a lot harder. You get to that point where it's so close, it's overwhelming. Regardless of what happens, this will be the last time I come for X Factor. I don't think I could put myself through it again.'

But it wasn't to be. 'John, this is a weird one for you, I know it is,' said Gary. 'I know you’ve been here before, I know what this means to you. I know you can sing, you really can.

'Here's where I have a problem, there are singers in this category who aren't half as good as you, but touch me more.'

In Mykonos Tulisa was ready to give her verdict to the groups.

The Estrelles go up against Essex duo 2 Shoes.

Tulisa decided to go with 2 Shoes, telling them, 'What I haven’t seen before is that fun factor but with someone that can actually sing. I think you will appeal to some people, I’m not sure if there is a big enough market for you guys. But I'm putting you through.'

The excited girls said to Dermot: 'Oh my god…Tulisa thinks we’re good shoes…what are we gonna wear, what am I gonna wear? Aw Dermot, it’s like totes amaze.'

Boy band Nu vibe were chosen over girl group The Lovettes, who Tulisa said 'just weren't blending.'

Next were couple Girl V Boy, who went up against Rhythmix, the girl band put together by the judges at bootcamp.

'We’ve never had a yes, we’ve been sent home like twice and it’s always in the back of our heads that we’re gonna get another no. We just want a yes so much,' Rhythmix said.

They got their wish and were sent through to the live finals, while Girl V Boy were sent home.

The twist came when Tulisa was left with boy bands The Risk and Chasing Keys.

After sending both home, she recalled Charlie from Chasing Keys and Ashley, Derry and Andrew from The Risk.

'Guys, I know right now you’re wondering what the hell is going on,' she told them. 'I liked both of your groups but do you know what my problem was? I didn’t believe either of them were potential winners.

'This has never ever in the history of X Factor been done before. You four stood out for me within your groups so what I’ve decided to do is offer you the chance to be in a super group.'

In Barcelona Louis revealed his final four in the Over 25s category.

Kitty Brucknell, 26, was put through despite Louis telling her: 'You’re a very passionate girl and you so want this I can tell that. But the thing that worries me is I think you will be a nightmare to work with. Because I think you’re already a diva, before the show starts.'

The final to go through was soldier Jonjo Kerr, who won his place above 51-year-old crooner Terry Winstanley.

Finally, the girls hear their fate from Kelly in Miami.

19-year-old Misha was certain she was going home, saying 'It's like being in love and having your heartbroken.'

Kelly was concerned that she didn't perform as well as she could have, with Misha blaming 'nerves and Jennifer Hudson.'

But she was put through regardless, ahead of Melanie. 'The best way to live your dreams is to wake up and once you’ve woken up keep running and never stop. Dream to reality - next stop world domination,' she said afterwards.

16-year-old Amelia Lily was the next to go through above last-minute addition Sarah Watson, who replaced Sian Phillips at the judges houses after she couldn't get a US visa.

'I can't believe it, I thought Kelly was going to say no,' Amelia said. 'I know I get compared to a lot of other people in the music industry but I am young and there is a lot more room for me to develop.

'I'm so excited I'm just going to work my socks off, I really am. To be singing to the whole country feels unbelievable, I'm so happy.’

Sophie Habibas made it to Kelly's final four above Holly, despite Kelly's concern that she didn't want it enough.

Finally, Jade went up against Janet - both audience favourites and early picks to make it all the way.

Despite her popularity, Jade was sent home. 'I’m gutted to have to go home and that tell everybody well it’s a no I wasn’t good enough. I’ve probably just blown the biggest chance I ever had,' she said.

Timid Janet from Northern Ireland was thrilled to win her place, saying: 'I'm so excited, I actually can't believe it. I can't express how happy I am. This is the start of being taken seriously as a musician. I'm really glad that Kelly believed in me and that she saw something that I didn't. I know that I can come out of myself now, I hope I can.’
