Nicki Minaj announces AMA nominations (but is she competing for the most outrageous outfit award?)

Nicki Minaj announced the nominations for the 2011 American Music Awards at a press conference in LA today.

But the singer seemed to be vying for her own award for the most outrageous outfit.

The Super Bass star, 28, put on an eye-popping display at the JW Marriott Los Angeles.

Her daring outfit featured a tiny bra and skirt which put her curves on show in all their glory.

She finished off the look with a half-blonde, half-blue wig and matching boots.

She joined fellow rapper Pitbull on stage to unveil the nominees, who are are determined from chart data.

British soul singer Adele has earned a leading four nominations.

Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Lil Wayne, Rihanna, Taylor Swift and The Band Perry have each earned three nominations.

Adele earned nominations for Artist of the Year, Favourite Female Pop/Rock Artist, Favourite Pop/Rock Album for 21 and Favourite Adult-Contemporary Artist.

And the nominees are: Nicki revealed that British singer Adele leads the way with four nominations

Also nominated for Artist of the Year were Lady Gaga, Lil Wayne, Katy Perry and Taylor Swift.

The awards will be presented November 20 at the Nokia Theatre.

Adele will compete with Lady Gaga and Katy Perry for Favourite Female Pop/Rock Artist.

Among the men, the nominees in the Pop/Rock category were Justin Bieber, Bruno Mars and Pitbull.

Winners will be determined by votes cast online at amavote.com or AMA.abc.com.

Much has been made of the rivalry between the hugely popular American Idol and the recently launched X Factor USA.

But if it really is pithy observations at dawn, 63-year-old Steve Tyler and Nicole Scherzinger, 33 , haven't got the memo.

The pair looked very friendly at the second leg of the iHeartRadio festival at Las Vegas's MGM Grand tonight as they jumped on stage to sing together, where the rest of the Idol judging team, Randy Jackson, 55, and Jennifer Lopez, 42, also appeared.

But that's not all they did, as the legendary rocker - looking much younger than his actual age in black jeans, vest and waistcoat - puckered up to the stunning Pussycat Doll.

It's not hard to see why, the latest glossy acquisition to Simon Cowell's juggernaut of success was an incredible vision in a figure-hugging silver dress.

But although it was quite the full on kiss, there is no suggestion of romance between this impossibly attractive pair.

Steve is dating girlfriend Erin Brady, and Nicole is happily tied to F1 champion and proud Brit, Lewis Hamilton.

But you'd have to assume that Mr Cowell, 51 , might baulk a little at Nicole's openly affectionate dealings with the man who replaced him so capably on American Idol.

Especially as she - in turn - took the chair of his dear, loyal Cheryl Cole.

Held at the Grand Garden Arena, which has a capacity of 17,000, there was no denying the scale.

Last night featured performances from the Black Eyed Peas, Jay Z, Alicia Keys, Coldplay, Jane's Addiction and Bruno Mars.

And tonight's roll-call was peppered with big stars, cult stars and HUGE stars.

She has been charming Britain with her witty personality and sparkling charisma as a judge on the X Factor.

And last night Kelly Rowland returned to the U.S stepping out in style at the MTV Video Music Awards.

The former Destiny's Child singer looked absolutely show-stopping in her plunging Falguni & Shane Peacock dress.

The short frock boasted a feathered skirt, long sheer sleeves and gold embellishment and Kelly teamed the stunning outfit with a pair of spiky black Christian Louboutin peep-toe heels.

The X Factor judge isn't the only star to step over to the dark side for the award ceremony and the singer was joined by Britney Spears, Zoe Saldana and Selena Gomez were also sporting the mysterious look.

Avatar actress Zoe Saldana donned a rocker style black studded cocktail dress by Barbara Bui with a plunging V shape neckline.

She paired the intricate Julian MacDonald dress with gold stiletto pumps by Brian Atwood and a gold Ofira cuff and matching earrings.

Other ladies who turned to the dark side included singers JoJo, Adele, Rebecca Black and Jessie J while Jersey Shore's J-Woww put a spin on the following in a dark metallic wing-sleeved cocktail dress with a plunging neckline.

Metallic dresses seemed to be a favourite of the Disney stars with both Demi Lovato and Victoria Justice rocking sequinned silver minis.

There were some celebrities who chose to add a splash of colour to the otherwise dark carpet fashions.

E! host Maria Menounos dazzled in a bright green draped dress which showed off her tanned skin and lean legs.

Other trends on the carpet included pastel colours which were worn by Katy Perry (in Versace Atelier), Nicki Minaj and Jersey Shore's Deena.
While both newlywed Kim Kardashian and Miley Cyrus bucked the cocktail dress trend by choosing long floor length and backless gowns.

The 29-year-old superstar had not officially announced that she was expecting and her arrival, with bump, on the carpet was the night's number one talking point.
