Tragedy struck in Mokwa town in Niger State as five members of the same family died early morning yesterday in their sleep, Daily Sun investigations have revealed.
Three other members of the family who lost consciousness were rushed to the Mokwa General Hospital by good Samaritans where they are now receiving treatment.
Among the dead were the head of the house, his wife and three of their children.
It was not clear what killed the family members but a source said that they might have died of sofocation arising from inhaling fumes from generator they put on before they went to bed on Monday night.
The investigations revealed that after the 8-member family took their dinner, each of them retired to their beds for the night but in the morning neighbours discovered that no member of the family came out either for the Muslim early morning prayers or later in the morning.
The development it was said forced the neighbours to force the door of their apartment open only to find the three surviving members of the family gasping for breath in the rooms.
The husband, wife and their three children were found to be stone dead in their rooms resulting in an alarm being raised which attracted other neighbours.
The remains of the deceased were rushed to the General Hospital in Mokwa for autopsy even as the three that suffocated were revived in the same hospital.
Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Oguche Richard Adamu who confirmed the story said the police were already investigating the circumstances that led to the death of the family members, saying first information report however showed that they could have died from inhaling generator fume.
