Women protest rape of 5-yr-old girl in Ekiti

Ado Ekiti -  A group of women in Ado Ekiti , Ekiti State capital, Thursday,  trooped out to the premises of  Ado Ekiti High court to protest the alleged rape of a five-year-old girl,  said to be an orphan by an ex-convict, (names withheld).
The protesters operating  under the aegis of Ifelere Mothers stormed the court premises as early as  8:00a.m  carrying placards with various inscriptions , which read thus; “stop all violence against women; Ekiti women say no to child abuse, justice must be done and child molestation is evil.”
Led by a former commissioner  in the state,  Mrs. Ronke Okunsanya and Mrs Beatrice Olaleye,  the women expressed dismay over the  incident and therefore  demanded for justice.

Okunsanya recounted a series of other child abuse cases,  in the state, in recent times.
Her words, “Two weeks ago, a 12-year-old girl was impregnated by a security man. Also some few weeks ago, a 14-year-old girl gave birth, we want our children in school to be lawyers, doctors and well-to-do in future. We don’t want men to take advantage of these ladies.”
But in an interview with the  girl, she  disclosed that the accused person had actually  invited her to his house, forced himself on her and warned her not to tell anyone.

Meanwhile, the accused person was arraigned at the Ado Ekiti Magistrate Court , Thursday.
The charge sheet read, “that you Ojo Gbenga ‘M’ aged 27 years old on 30/05/2011 between the hours of 0700hrs and 2200hrs at No.4 Adebayo street, Ado-EKiti in Ado-Ekiti Magisterial District did unlawfully had carnal knowledge with one (name withheld) ‘F’ under 5years old. You thereby committed an offence contrary and punishable under section 218 of the criminal code cap 30 vol.11 laws of Ondo state of Nigeria 1978 as applicable in Ekiti state.”
According to the police Prosecutor, Corporal Caleb Leramo he said the accused person had a canal knowledge  of the  young girl  about two days ago.
The magistrate, ordered  the accused  person to  be remanded in prison custody until June 16, the next adjourned date.
