The Duchess of Cambridge wowed the crowds at her first military engagement yesterday - including one young fan who was overcome by shyness in the presence of the Royal Family's newest member.

Kate, 29, bended down to chat to the girl - who was there with her mother - and later reassuringly touched her head.

Prince William watched on, smiling, as his wife displayed her natural sense of ease with her royal duties.

Looking stylish in a navy military-style dress adorned with buttons, Kate was handing out medals to soldiers at Windsor's Victoria Barracks who have recently returned from serving in Afghanistan.

It was the first time that the royal couple have visited the regiment since William became Colonel of the Irish Guards in February - a role which is close to his heart.

The 1st Battalion Irish Guards returned in April from a six-month tour in Afghanistan where they were deployed to 22 different locations in Helmand Province, tasked with developing the Afghan Army.

'I stand before you with pride and humility. I am proud to be your Colonel. I am humbled by the thought of the sacrifice that you and your families have made,' said Prince William.

It's not the first time Kate has appeared broody.

At her first Trooping the Colour earlier this month, she focused her attention on Lady Helen Taylor’s daughters Eloise, eight, and Estella, six, and Viscount Linley’s daughter Margarita, nine, who had been one of her bridesmaids.
