Slain corpers’ colleagues return to Bauchi, forgive Yuguda

Following the remorse shown by  Bauchi State Governor Isa Yuguda over the death of some corps members during the post-election violence in the state and his offensive comments afterwards, some colleagues of the fallen NYSC members are back to duty in the state.
Yuguda’s administration, as a show of remorse, compensated the 10 families of the slain corps members with 2 million Naira each,  with the plea by the state government to the run-away NYSC members to return to the state, as  adequate security measures have been put in place in the state to safeguard their lives.

Some of the corp members, who responded to the government’s plea, have reported back to the state and vowed to remain in the state throughout their service year.
One of the corps members,  Christiana Poko, from Delta, who spoke to Sunday Vanguard, said that since the code of the NYSC states that ‘we will serve our father’s land, under the rain and in the sun’, it does not matter what has happened in the past”.
She explained that the violence of this nature does not occur in Bauchi only, but that worse things take place  in other parts of the country, wondering why Bauchi  case should be exaggerated.
She said that Bauchi  is now peaceful, because adequate security measures have  been put in place and normalcy has returned to the state.
Christiana added that another reason  some corp members decided to return back to Bauchi, was that, “the  governor publicly apologized to us. We were touched, because he was very emotional about what happened to us, despite the fact that he said what he said from his religious point of view”.
The corp member further stated that everybody is prone to making mistakes and hence deserves a second chance, adding that they are back to the state, to give the state government a second chance.
