Gunmen who abducted five National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members in Rivers State, recently, have reduced the ransom from a whopping N100 million to N10 million.
The state Commissioner of Police, Suleiman Abba, made this known yesterday while briefing newsmen on efforts being made by men of the State Police Command to rescue the kidnapped corps members and arrest the suspects.
He gave the names of the victims as Yusuf Olumide, Mrs. Faseye Fumilayo, Chinonye Ejiogu, Vivian Ekwuanya and Nkechi. In a related development, the state police commissioner said a notorious armed gang linked with the recent killing of policemen in the state has been smashed by the State Police Command.
The police also alleged that the gang was responsible for several armed robberies in the state and the death of six policemen recently.
Briefing newsmen on yesterday, the state Commissioner of Police, Suleiman Abba, said the smashing of the gang was an accomplished job by the Command to rid the state of crime. Abba explained that the deceased policemen were attacked in unprovocative circumstances, which led to their death. He said the hoodlums were squashed in Aluu in Ikwerre Local Government Area of the state.
Items recovered from them are eight AK 47 rifles, a pistol, over 600 rounds of live ammunition and 55 magazines. Others are charms, bunch of keys, a mask, a bottle of whitish substance and two Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) without registration numbers. The police commissioner stated that the guns recovered included those belonging to the deceased and suspects.
He assured the public of security and appealed that they should assist police with useful information to combat crime in the society. On interrogation, the nabbed gang member, who claimed he is from Akwa Ibom State and the gang driver, mentioned the name of their leader as Bishop, an ex-militant.
He confirmed that they were involved in several criminal activities including murder, kidnapping and robbery.
The commissioner promised that police would ensure the suspects were brought to book.
