ENUGU – TRAGEDY struck in Enugu, Sunday afternoon, when a four-storey building under construction collapsed and reportedly claimed three lives.
Three persons who were reportedly working in the building at the time of the incident have not been found by press time, Sunday.
The three construction workers were believed to have been buried in the debris as sympathizers who rushed to the scene after the building collapsed said that they heard some people shouting from the compound but could not sight them.
It could not be immediately ascertained why the building which comprised 10 flats of three-bedrooms each, collapsed, but some sympathizers met at the scene blamed it on poor quality and substandard building materials used.
Work on the building, according to a resident, Ogechi Okoye, commenced about two months ago.
When Vanguard visited the building located along Ndiagu Amechi Road, Pocket Layout, behind Loma Linda Housing Estate in Enugu capital city, some people were seen searching for the missing persons.
The building collapsed at about 1pm, according to Miss Okoye, who lives in the neighbourhood.
“I heard an unusual noise from the compound shortly after I returned from church service and rushed out of our house only to see the tall building falling down.
“The main gate of the house is normally locked when no work is going on but today it was wide open and while passing I saw some people working in the house. We heard some people shouting when the building was coming down but we couldn’t see anybody when we went inside,” she narrated.
Some policemen were said to have visited the compound few hours later but left when they could not locate the property owner.
When contacted, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu said he was aware of the incident but was yet to be officially briefed.
