Celebrities show off their Halloween creations on Twitter

And the prize for the best costume goes to... Celebrities show off their Halloween creations on Twitter

Over the past few years, increasing amount of celebrities have been turning to Twitter to give themselves a voice and self-publicise.

So when it came to Halloween, what better way for the stars to show off their creativity than to upload their costumes on the micro-blogging site.

Celebrities from the A-list to the Z-list couldn't wait to show off their handiwork as they prepared to celebrate the spooky holiday.

While British celebrities were more traditional when it came to costumes and stuck to the horror theme, Americans dressed in a wide variety of ensembles.

In Hollywood, it was reunion for former Disney stars as Zac Efron and Miley Cyrus attended sisters Amanda and Alyson Michalka' Halloween party.

High School Musical heart-throb Efron wore a very tight pair of shorts as he dressed as a Reno 911 police officer.

Although it wasn't clear exactly what Cyrus had dressed as, she certainly made an impression with her make-up and low-cut top.
Country singer LeAnn Rimes dressed as a 'trailer trash' chain-smoking pregnant bride, while Glee star Lea Michele certainly went to a lot of effort as the Swan Queen from Swan Lake.
The actress looked straight out of the National Ballet in her tutu, tights and feathered headdress.

Hopefully Jennifer Lopez was flattered when reality star-turned-fashion designer Nicole Richie dressed as the multi-hyphenate Latina star.

The mother-of-two looked a dead-ringer for J.Lo in a pink velour tracksuit, aviator shades, big hoop earrings and a 'Croydon facelift' ponytail as she attended Kate Hudson's Halloween party in Los Angeles.

Modern Family star Sofia Vergara showed her fun side and steered away from a sexy ensemble in favour of an Angry Birds costume.

Unfortunately, some celebrities' costumes weren't so original.
Newly-single Kim Kardashian and dancer/actress Julianne Hough both dressed as Batman comics villain Poison Ivy.

Katherine Jenkins: Why it's all change for the newly-engaged singer

Katherine Jenkins: Why it's all change for the newly-engaged singer

She’s a global superstar, has sold millions of albums and reputedly secured the biggest classical record deal in history, but Welsh mezzo-soprano Katherine Jenkins is ready to switch tempo. She tells Benji Wilson why family has become her number-one priority

'I have travelled the world several times in the past few years, so I've missed so much of what's going on at home,' says Katherine Jenkins
'I have travelled the world several times in the past few years, so I've missed so much of what's going on at home,' says Katherine Jenkins

Katherine Jenkins’s large blue eyes are spilling over with tears. ‘Honestly, family is so important to me,’ she says, her low, softly Welsh-accented voice quavering. ‘It’s much more important than my career.’ To say I’m taken aback would be an understatement. I’d always assumed that Katherine’s peach-perfect exterior concealed a steely ambition that would rival Madonna’s: you don’t get the biggest record deal in classical music history and go on to sell in excess of five million albums if you’re a shy, retiring homemaker. Now a regular judge on ITV’s Popstar to Operastar, her personal fortune was estimated this year at £13 million, considerably more than her rival Welsh songstress Charlotte Church (though Katherine says that’s ‘complete rubbish. I’d love to know how anyone can possibly estimate what I’ve got in the bank. These things get really exaggerated.’)

Perhaps it’s the prospect of her marriage next year to Gethin Jones, one-time Blue Peter presenter turned TV personality. Or maybe it’s weariness after spending last year touring the globe with her platinum-selling album Believe. Whatever the reason, it’s clear that Katherine is putting herself under increasing pressure to reconcile the domestic side of her life with the demands of her extraordinary career.

We have met at YOU’s photo shoot, in a beautiful house in North London. Katherine has been in make-up for hours before I’m allowed to see her, but I can’t believe she needs it – she’s as pretty as a Disney princess made flesh. Her eyes are enormous and thickly lashed, her skin a flawless caramel, her hair bouncy, and her Dolce & Gabbana sundress barely contains her pneumatic curves. Altogether, Katherine looks the picture of glowing good health, but she admits that she is tired.

‘I have travelled the world several times in the past few years,’ she says. ‘I have six weeks at home now, which is the longest time in about three years. Unpacking my toiletries was such a joy – to be able to put things back in the cupboard was really nice.’ By the time you read this, though, she will have spent the summer performing at concerts around the UK, before heading off to Australia to sing with Plácido Domingo.

Is it tough maintaining a relationship with a new fiancé under those circumstances? ‘It’s hard to keep a relationship going with anyone,’ she says. ‘I miss so much of what’s going on. Whenever I get a minute, I go to see my godchildren and do all that kind of stuff. I Skype and try to stay on top of what’s happening in everyone’s lives, but it is really difficult.’

And even while she is in London, she’s not putting her feet up. On top of doing up the house that she and Gethin have bought in Richmond, Southwest London, she has been putting the final touches to her eighth album, Daydream. ‘Believe was by far the most commercial album I’ve made,’ she says. ‘This is a return to my roots and the sound people know me for – folk songs, light classical pieces, music from shows, hymns in English and Welsh. Songs that touch me.’ It includes an interpretation of the Celtic classic ‘Black is the Colour’, ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ from Les Misérables and a new composition of ‘Ave Maria’. ‘I’m drawn to the emotion in a song. There’s no point in singing the song if it doesn’t do anything for me. Things have changed – it’s the first album I’m making in my 30s, I’m getting married, and I feel quite a lot of the music is about where I am at the moment.’

Another album of Katherine’s music has just been released, although she has pleaded with fans not to buy it: ‘Universal Records are putting out yet another compilation album of my music called One Fine Day. Considering that I haven’t recorded for them since 2008, there is no new music and I don’t want you to feel conned,’ she tweeted.

‘Tonight I’m going to dinner with Plácido Domingo, which is hilarious. I keep thinking, “But I’m from Neath!”’

Alongside her career, her relationship with Gethin Jones is the most important thing in her life right now. Katherine is determined to keep it out of the limelight – so it was perhaps a tactical error to fall in love with a TV presenter whom she met on Strictly Come Dancing.

Since then, however, the couple have made superhuman efforts to stay well below the radar. ‘This is not a relationship for getting extra publicity,’ Katherine says firmly. ‘I understand to a certain extent why people are interested, but some things are off-limits. It was a battle to begin with, but people are getting better at understanding why I don’t talk about my personal life. We just want to keep something for ourselves.’ When pressed, she admits with a blush that the enormous solitaire sparkler that glitters on her ring finger was designed by Gethin himself. But when they tie the knot next year, probably in Wales, you won’t be seeing the nuptials splashed all over the pages of
a celebrity magazine – she says they’ve already turned down generous offers to talk about the engagement.

‘From day one, we’ve said that that’s not what we’re about,’ she says. ‘I’m not a person who puts my private life out there. I was on my bike the other day in Richmond Park and I was followed by photographers. I didn’t even see them, but a couple of days later, the people decorating the house said to me, “Hey, Kath, you’re in the newspaper!”’ She shrugs her shoulders. ‘I don’t like moaning – I know I’m so lucky – but I find it difficult when I’m intruded on.’

Katherine is ready to switch tempo

And fame, unlikely as it seems, was never part of Katherine’s game plan. She was brought up with her younger sister Laura in Neath in a close-knit, supportive family. ‘It was like The Darling Buds of May,’ she says with a smile. ‘My mum was one of four, my dad was one of five and there are lots of cousins and aunties. My nana lived in the same street; one auntie lived a few minutes’ drive in one direction, another in the other. My best memories of growing up are of us all going away in our caravans together, or going to the beach en masse, 20 of us.’ Money was tight: her mother Susan, who worked as a mammographer, was the breadwinner as her father Selwyn had retired from a factory job.

‘My parents didn’t have lots of money. What they had, they spent on us. Any spare cash went on singing or piano lessons.’ The whole family was musical – everyone sang in the church choir and Katherine’s paternal grandmother was a locally renowned mezzo-soprano. ‘I sang from the age of three,’ she says. ‘It was all I wanted to do and my parents were supportive. From an early age I took any opportunity to perform.’ She joined a church choir in Neath at the age of seven and later became Welsh Choir Girl of the Year.

Her dream was to become an opera singer and her father’s death from cancer when she was 15 made her all the more determined to succeed, for him as well as herself. But in her wildest dreams, she never imagined her career taking her further than the choruses of the Royal Opera House or the English National Opera.

‘I would have sung in whatever I could find,’ she says. ‘If I could have made a small career as
a singer, I would have been happy. I didn’t think about fame and fortune.’

She won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she studied for four years. ‘After I graduated, I felt particularly young in my voice, so I decided to take a couple of years out to teach and earn the money to go back and do the postgraduate course,’ she says.

Meanwhile, a producer friend approached her with an idea to record the ‘Flower Duet’ from Lakmé (aka the theme tune from that famous British Airways TV advert) as a dance track. The demo tape got passed to Universal, and three months after she graduated, they signed her up
to a six-album deal.

‘When the album came out, I was still teaching. That was a weird time, because the students
would be saying, “Miss! You were on telly last night!”, and asking for autographs.’

In fact, it’s not just her looks that remind you of Disney, it’s the Cinderella-style transformation
of her fortunes as she was catapulted in a few months from teacher to nation’s sweetheart and now, thanks to a reputed £5.8 million deal with Warner, a worldwide superstar.

She has sung for the Queen, the Pope and at Barbra Streisand’s birthday party, at which she put on an impromptu performance of Puccini’s famous aria ‘O Mio Babbino Caro’. ‘On the outside I must have looked quite composed but on the inside I was screaming,’ she confesses. ‘And I was thinking, “I don’t know how to begin telling my mum about this.” It was the ultimate pinch-yourself moment.’ Those moments keep coming. ‘Tonight I’m going to dinner with Plácido Domingo, which is hilarious to me,’ she says. ‘We are really good friends. But on the way over here I kept thinking, “But I’m from Neath! How come I’m going to dinner with Plácido?”’

Katherine has sung for the Queen, the Pope and at Barbra Streisand¿s birthday party

Although Katherine always seems polished and poised, no matter how daunting the occasion, you can’t help but wonder if a tiny part of her wishes she hadn’t made it quite so big, so fast.

‘There were people in my year who I think were better singers than me,’ she says. ‘If I’d gone back and done the postgraduate course, I’d only have finished a couple of years ago. I’d still be working my way up through the choruses. That was the path I was supposed to go down.’

She would love to perform the whole of Carmen one day, hugely admires operatic sopranos such as Angela Gheorghiu and is cross and slightly defensive about the snobbery that comes her way from the music purists who disapprove of ‘popera’.

‘I get it all the time,’ she says. ‘They’re not happy about anyone who makes classical music more popular. Well, that’s fine. I don’t make my albums for the classical critics. As long as someone buys my album and enjoys it, I really don’t care.’ All the same, now she’s got eight albums under her belt and is famous around the world, you can’t blame her for fantasising about a change of pace.

It’s telling that it’s when we get on to the subject of marriage and children that she becomes emotional. She says that she wouldn’t hesitate to sacrifice her stellar career for her family.

‘If you’re lucky enough to have kids, you want to enjoy it. I don’t want to compromise on that. I will make a decision to be a really good mum, that’s what I’d want to focus on. Hopefully, I would be able to come back afterwards.’ And if she can’t? ‘If I can’t, I’ll just enjoy being a mum.’ So how would she like to be remembered, I wonder? ‘I’d like my tombstone to say something like, “Beloved mother and daughter…who could sing a bit.”’ And then the tears start to flow.

Katherine’s new album Daydream is out tomorrow on Warner Music. Her UK tour starts on 7 January

She's known for her powerful voice and sunny disposition.

But as Katherine Jenkins prepares to release her first single from her new album, it looks like she has had a moody makeover.

The Welsh mezzo-soprano looks suitably brooding as she sings about the pain of heartbreak in her new promo Break It To My Heart.

The contemporary song, produced by John Shanks, who has also worked with Take That, is the first single from her new album Daydream.

The video, a departure from her previous promos, is directed by Christopher Cottam, who also helmed American R&B singer Kelis' 2010 video Acapella.

Looking trapped in a castle-like building, Jenkins has nothing but the cold walls for company as she laments over her broken relationship.

At one point, it appears the walls are closing in on her as she attempts to break free from her emotional turmoil.

But fortunately for Jenkins, her real-life lovelife isn't quite so distressing, as she's happily engaged to Welsh TV presenter Gethin Jones.

The Popstar To Operatstar judge recorded Daydream - her eighth album - in Los Angeles and London in spring this year and promises an eclectic mix of songs from classical and traditional to folk and easy pop.

The disc features the Celtic classic Black Is The Colour, I Dreamed A Dream from Les Misérables in French, a new compostion of Ava Maria and A Flower Tells A Story - a tribute to service men and women.

Last month, Jenkins appealed to fans to avoid a compilation of her songs released by her former record label Decca.

As Daydream is set to be released with Warner Bros, the singer was concerned some fans may mistakenly buy the One Fine Day album believing it is her latest release.

Jenkins made history in 2008 when she signed a new recording deal with Warner, said to be the biggest in classical music.

Daydream, the album, goes on sale on October 10.

Katherine Jenkins has asked her fans around the world NOT to buy her new album.

The Welsh mezzo-soprano, 31, said she didn't want them to 'feel conned' when they realised One Fine Day had no new music on it.

The album is being released later this year by Universal - under the classical wing Decca - which Katherine left in 2008.

She signed a £5.8million deal with Warner Brothers which at the time was the biggest classical recording deal in history.

Since then, Universal has released two compilation albums of Katherine's music during her time at the label. The Ultimate Collection was released in 2009 and the Sweetest Love, earlier this year.

She said on Twitter yesterday: 'Just heard that Universal @DeccaRecords are putting out YET ANOTHER compilation album of my music called One Fine Day.

'Considering that I haven't recorded 4them since 2008,there is NO new music & it's stuff u already have.Don't want u 2 feel conned.Pls RT #DontBuyOneFineDay.'

She then encouraged fans to buy her new album which comes out in October under Warner Bros. instead.

'The NEW album featuring all newly recorded tracks (out on Warner Bros) is called Daydream. Make sure you get the right one! #Daydream'

WalesOnline reported that when asked about its latest release, a spokesman for Decca did not comment on Katherine's outburst.

It said: 'Decca is delighted to be releasing a new collection of favourite Katherine Jenkins songs this autumn, coupled with a special bonus DVD, to celebrate her extraordinary ongoing career and artistic progression.'

Welsh music promoter John Rostron, told the website the practice 'happens all the time', most recently when Radiohead parted ways with EMI and the label re-packaged and re-released their back catalogue.

'Unfortunately for Katherine it is a downside to signing yourself to a major record label. You have to do it to get the support you need to grow as an artist but unfortunately there is a penalty for that.

'I expect when she was first starting out someone would have warned her about it, but at the time you are always too excited to imagine you would ever part from your record label. But it’s like a marriage – sometimes they don’t work out.'

The singer - who is set to perform alongside opera star Placido Domingo next month - is making plans for her wedding to former Blue Peter presenter Gethin Jones.

The pair are yet to reveal the venue for the big day but they are expected to pick somewhere in Wales.

The couple live together in a £4.7 million house in South West London.

The English Katherine Jenkins: She's a £5.50 an hour waitress but Laura Wright isn't giving up her day job just yet

The English Katherine Jenkins: She's a £5.50 an hour waitress but Laura Wright isn't giving up her day job just yet

The Queen’s a fan, and her debut album is at the top of the charts, but Britain’s latest singing sensation isn’t giving up the day job just yet.

Laura Wright still waits on tables at a riverside restaurant in London for £5.50 an hour – and says: ‘I don’t want to take anything for granted.’

Soprano Laura, 21, has already been hailed as the English answer to Welsh opera star Katherine Jenkins.

But she seems unfazed by the scale of her sudden success and unwilling to let it get in the way of her daily routine, continuing to put in the hours at the Northbank Restaurant and Bar, next to the Millennium Bridge in Central London.

She says: ‘I’d love to be able to give up my bar job. I don’t get paid much. But a lot of people are struggling, especially students. And I’ve still got two years to go in my degree at the Royal College of Music.’

Released last month, Laura’s album The Last Rose has now topped the classical album charts for three weeks. It is a collection of 12 folk songs from around the British Isles, produced by Anna Barry and the team behind the hugely successful album of music from April’s Royal Wedding.

Laura says: ‘They are very old melodies brought forward into the modern day for a new audience. I recorded the album with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and every note they play is crammed with emotion.’

'Incredible': Katherine Jenkins
'Incredible': Katherine Jenkins

The small-town girl from Suffolk is aware of the buzz she’s creating. Formerly a member of the all-girl classical quartet All Angels, Laura realises she is being compared to Ms Jenkins.

‘I feel really excited,’ she says. ‘Katherine has done incredible things. And I think you need a rival to her.

‘There is no one who is flying the English flag – or standing proud for brunettes. I’d like to be known one day as better and more successful but it’s a good place to start.’

All Angels have toured with Ms Jenkins, but Laura said: ‘Katherine barely spoke to us.’

Laura was born in Suffolk and with her three older brothers was raised in the tiny village of Framlingham, near Stowmarket, by her father Paul, a financial adviser, and mother Caroline, an artist.

She won two scholarships to attend the fee-paying Framlingham School. It was there she first discovered her talent for singing. In 2005, her music teacher encouraged her to enter BBC Radio 2’s Young Chorister of the Year competition. She reached the final.

‘On the day, I was so unprepared,’ she recalls. ‘The three other girls started to get robed up, with cassocks and medals. I didn’t have any of those things – I was wearing ripped jeans.

‘My auntie lent me her trousers

and the vicar lent me his black cassock which my dad shortened with duct tape.’

She may have fallen short in the style stakes, but Laura was soon able to forget about her slightly odd outfit.

‘When I found out I had won, I was the happiest I have ever been. I just couldn’t stop grinning.’

That success brought her to the attention of record company Universal, which was at that time auditioning young singers for an all-girl quartet and a million-pound deal.

Manager Steve Abbott immediately recognised Laura’s talent. So at the age of 15, she became the youngest member of All Angels.

The group’s first album, released in 2006, entered the UK charts at No 9 and won them a platinum disc.

It was through All Angels that Laura had the chance to sing before the Queen, at the Festival of Remembrance in the Royal Albert Hall in 2007.

The Queen described Laura’s performance as ‘lovely’, but the pressures of performing in All Angels, as well as keeping up with her schoolwork, were beginning to take their toll and Laura started to suffer from alopecia.

Then, last year, she took the tough decision to leave All Angels in order to concentrate on her degree, for which she had won a scholarship in 2009.

Last Christmas, Laura was given a present – an old book of songs and ¬lyrics including many traditional songs from all over the British Isles such as Scarborough Fair, Skye Boat Song and The Last Rose Of Summer.

Her Irish grandmother, who had sung them as a girl, had decided to pass them on. It was this gift that gave Laura the inspiration for her album.

These days, she sings mostly at large fundraisers for the Royal British Legion and at private concerts and sporting events.

‘I love to perform before sports

fans,’ she says. ‘At one rugby international, I had to sing the Welsh national anthem.

‘I’d been panicking

and I’d had just a few weeks to learn it and had been texting Aled Jones, who is a good friend, begging for help with the pronunciation.

‘If it goes wrong you’ve got 50,000 Welsh fans who could turn on you at any moment!’

They are rarely seen out together and never make public appearances on the red carpet like so many other celebrity couples.
So Katherine Jenkins and fiancé Gethin Jones caused quite a stir as they arrived at Wimbledon today to watch Jo-Wilfried Tsonga take on Novak Djokovic in the men's semi-finals.
Opera star Katherine looked stunning in her £275 Whistles Siri dress which she teamed with tan accessories.
