ABUJA-Governor Isa Yuguda of Bauchi State has said reports quoting him in a section of the media which portrayed him as being insensitive to the death of some members of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, in the state during the recent political riots that trailed the presidential election was done out of context.
Some reports in the media had quoted the governor as saying that as a member of the NYSC in the South-West in 1979, he was attacked and had his house also burnt in riots, thereby down-playing the gravity of the corps members’ murders.
But in a statement weekend, Senior Special Assistant to the governor on Media and Publicity, Sanusi Muhammad, said Governor Yuguda’s statement was deliberately slanted to get a commercial headline and portray him in negative light.
The governor was quoted as saying that as a detribalised Nigerian with enduring friendships all over the country, as well as a public officer with deep respect for the sanctity of human life, it was unthinkable of him to trivialise the loss of lives, especially those of corps members, who were in the state on national assignment.
