My husband died on empty stomach

Wife of slain Divisional Crime Officer (DCO) of Ibereko Barracks, Mr. Samson Okedusi, Tayo has told how her husband rushed to his death. Tayo, who spoke at their home, House No. 1 Sam Tayo Street, Ibereko, said she had prepared tea for her husband before he received a phone call that he should report in the office.

Mrs. Okedusi said her husband did not drink the tea as he told her to put it in a flask for him. She said she bade him goodbye, not knowing it was the last time she would see her heartthrob. The woman, who was still in shock said as she did not suspect anything, she went to a location where she was building a mall.


She said while she was on the site, she received a phone call from an unknown person to call her husband.
She said she became apprehensive as it was too early to call her husband as he had just left home. The woman who wept intermittently said she went across the road and recharged her phone.
According to her, when she called her husband’s phone, it was switched off.
“So, I quickly called the DPO because I know he was going to see the Commanding Officer of Ibereko Barracks, Colonel Nasaba, but, his phone was also switched off.”

She said she quickly called a police Sergeant who always accompanied his husband. “His phone rang but what I heard was not palatable. He was speaking in hushed voice, telling me that something terrible has happened and that he was hiding somewhere watching.” Continuing, she said as she did not understand what the Sergeant was saying, she decided to call Inspector Emma, who also was panting. Tayo said she rushed down home only to meet her pastor who told her that her husband needed some clothes. She said as she was in the state of confusion, someone called to break the sad news.

“I felt like dying. If I had known I would have compelled him to take the tea. He did not eat as he was rushing to death.”
Tayo, however, called on President Goodluck Jonathan to wade into the matter to ensure that the killers of her husband are brought to book. She said as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Jonathan should make sure that the killings do not become another case of unknown soldiers. The younger brother to the deceased, Dr Michael Okedusi wants the president to set up a Judicial Commission of inquiry into the brutal killing of his brother and his superior.

He said the family does not want any form of compensation but justice. He wondered why the soldiers should kill unarmed men who went on a peace mission. According to him, there was no basis for killing the officers when the policemen who allegedly shot dead a soldier were already in the custody of the Army.
